Banff Under 16's Tournament

Buckie under 16’s team entered their first seven-a-side tournament today at Banff along with Ellon, Shire, Mackie, Moray and Fraserburgh. Competing against some very high quality teams we always knew it would be hard, however, the whole team were a credit to the club. Buckie fought hard for every ball and although not winning any of their games they were rewarded with some very high quality tries and by the end of the tournament had earned the respect of many of the other teams more experienced players. We even had a friendly against Shire at the end which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The performance and attitude of all the players is very encouraging for the future of the club..

Scotland V England Murrayfield 8th March 2008

Scotland's Captain Mike Blair lifts the Calcutta Cup after defeating England 15-9 in the Six Nations Championship rugby match at Murrayfield, Edinburgh, Scotland, Saturday, March, 8, 2008.

Use the link above to see the game in full until 14th March 2008.

What a day, what a game, what a result!!

We started off at 9am, with great excitment and lots of energy. Arrived at Murrayfield around 1.30pm got everyone in and found our seats. We were right in the corner of the North stand, so when the heavens opened we were just covered by the overhang.

Excitment grew as the preperations began. The mascots came out, everyone looked with great intent at the large screen and their before our eyes was Ross Morrison, a large cheer erupted from our small sector.

Out came both teams, the whole stadium went electric, with a rendition of Flower of Scotland. We then had the fly past, two tornado F3 fighter jets from 56 Squadron, RAF Leuchars in Fife. This was the last time that 56 squadren will fly past as they are being disbanded on 22nd April 2008.

It was then down to the Match!

Chris Paterson's kicks gave Scotland a deserved 9-3 lead at the break.

England's solitary first-half points came from a Jonny Wilkinson penalty which saw him become the highest scorer in the history of Test rugby.

Two more penalties put Scotland 15-3 up and a brace of Wilkinson penalties was not enough for the hapless visitors.

The appalling conditions meant it was never likely to be a free-flowing affair and the main points of interest were the continued goal-kicking excellence of Paterson and Wilkinson.

There was then a very nasty moment as Rory Lamont was knocked out when he collided with Balshaw's knees as the pair converged on a kick ahead.

The Scotland winger was given oxygen as he was taken off on a stretcher and taken to hospital, but later reports said he was recovering well.

Scotland brought on Dan Parks at fly-half with the versatile Paterson moving onto the right wing.

The home side twice held firm after England tried to drive over through their forwards after kicking penalties into the corner.

Despite being repelled on those occasions the England pack briefly looked like it was gaining the upper hand with their superiority at a scrum earning them a penalty after 27 minutes which Wilkinson slotted to set the new record.

But Scotland came back into the game and two more penalties from Paterson gave the hosts a 9-3 lead at the break after 40 minutes of less than thrilling rugby.

The game had been as shocking as the weather but the Scots were thoroughly enjoying themselves and they went 15-3 up with a penalty apiece from Paterson and Parks in the 10 minutes after the re-start.

Neither side was creating much in attack but Scotland were managing to put England under lots of pressure with their defence as the visitors rapidly lost their discipline.

Just as they looked like taking charge, Scotland's ill-discipline allowed Wilkinson, who had missed with a long-range effort in the first half, to land two penalties to cut the gap to six points.

With over 10 minutes remaining Ashton decided to remove Wilkinson, whose kicking out of hand had been very poor, and captain Phil Vickery from the fray.

Their withdrawal was a major success for Scotland and they wound down the clock with some ease to repeat their 2006 success and reclaim the Calcutta Cup.

The stadium eruupted with great delight, Mike Blair then had the honour of collecting the Calcutta Cup on behalf of his Team and Country from HRH Princess Royal. The atmosphere was electrifying as The home team took their lap of Honor to the delight of the fans.

Back to our bus for the journey home, The lads were all delighted with their day out as they draped the inside of the bus in the many flags that had been bought.

Buckie RFC had behaved impeccably throughout the day, and did their Club and town very proud. An absolutly fantastic day was had by all.

S. Wilson Club Secretary.
